You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; You have put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, To the end that my tongue and my heart and everything glorious within me may SING praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever. Psalm 30:11-12

Happy 5th Birthday Josiah
Five years ago tonight, my first baby was born! Actually, he was born at 4:15pm in Grapevine, Texas. That baby boy changed everything about me and continues to change me daily! Oh how I love him! This morning when he woke up, I told him about the day he was born. I told him who was at the hospital and how Daddy painted my toenails blue and how I had my favorite food that night after he was born, a turkey sandwich from Chili's with the biggest Dr. Pepper ever! "You were my very first baby Josiah and you changed my life forever." He looked at me with those dark brown, Milk Dud eyes and said, "Am I still your baby Mommy?"
Tonight he had Birthday money to spend and since his actual party is not until the 19th, we let him choose what he wanted for dinner and then took him to WalMart to pick out some birthday toys. At first he wanted Taco Bell (his favorite) but then he changed his mind to Taco Cabana (2nd favorite) because it's right by WalMart and he knew we were going there after we ate dinner.
This afternoon I made him a Birthday Cake and when we got home, we had chocolate cake and played with Spiderman toys. At Christmas, he was obsessed with Power Rangers. Then on New Years Day, our friends came over for supper and he wore his Batman costume almost the entire time they were here and even told them to call him Batman. "I'm not Josiah. I'm Batman." Last week he saw all three Spiderman movies in a row (not on the same days) and has suddenly become obsessed with Spiderman. He had seen part one before but didn't seem too attached. Now he is over the top! Mama prefers Batman but he doesn't seem to care. So a few days ago we got this thing in the mail from Target that showed a Spiderman costume. Well, he has not quit talking about it and said that we had to buy him a Spiderman costume for his Birthday. I knew it would be hard to find without ordering online but he just knew that he would get it on his birthday.
Unfortunately, I already had his birthday present and it was a Leap Frog laptop. Since we are learning to read and starting homeschooling next year, I thought it would be perfect. Do you know what he did when I gave it to him? He started CRYING!! "Mommy, I told you that I really wanted the Spiderman costume. I don't like this. This is not a good birthday present for my 5yr birthday." Jeremy was not too happy with his response and decided it would be a good time to tell him about boys and girls that don't get presents and how blessed he is to have a mom and dad that bought him something. Jeremy then decided to think it was all our fault that we have a spoiled five year old and then I thought to myself, "He's a little boy and every kid is spoiled!" Seriously, he does not get everything he wants from us. I really think we do a good job of keeping him level headed when it comes to toys and stuff. Our kids will not have cell phones at seven years old, even if every other seven year old has one! There are plenty of kids out there without boundaries and Josiah is NOT one of them and you would know that if you knew our family! So I am not about to feel bad for him throwing a fit over getting an educational toy instead of a Spiderman costume! Ralphie did not want a bunny suit! He wanted a Red Ryder BB Gun!! Jeremy saw my point so we explained to Josiah that he had some money to spend at WalMart. The crying stopped.
Plus what kid is not confused when their Birthday is a week after Christmas? He is still in the mode of thinking he will get EXACTLY what he asks for. And poor Ava Beth turned three years old on December 22nd and every single time the phone rang today and it was someone calling to tell him Happy Birthday, she got mad and proclaimed that it was STILL her Birthday. She really had a hard time when we were at WalMart. Thankfully he big brother allowed her to help blow out the five candles on his cake! She really thought the cake was hers too. When my Dad called to say Happy Birthday to Josiah, Ava Beth grabbed the phone and said "It's my Bir-day too!"
Obviously there was no costume but we did find a mask which also included this thing that shoots webs! Daddy thought it would be a good idea to get some Spiderman pajamas so he could wear the mask with them and have the costume! Great idea Daddy! Josiah really thought that was the coolest thing ever! After picking out the pajamas, Josiah decided he needed Spiderman underwear too! Needless to say, my brand new five year old is decked out in Spiderman tonight! I just looked in on him and the mask is off but it's laying next to him. His tummy is full with Taco Cabana and homemade chocolate cake. He's a happy 5yr old. He's a healthy 5yr old. He's a smart 5yr old and He is a LOVED 5yr old. It must be so cool to be him. He has to feel like the luckiest boy alive. I am head over hills in love with that boy and every single day, I fall for him more and more. I love you Si Si! You are Mommy's boy and yes, you are still my baby too.
(And please don't make fun of my cake decorating. I have decided that I am going to try fondant icing for the party. I HATE BUTTERCREAM! This afternoon I was on the phone with my friend in Dallas who is an AMAZING cake person, the best EVER and I was trying to explain that my red icing was not turning red but pink and I even had Wilton! So, I am going to beg her to tell me how to do a BASIC fondant cake in black and red. Please Richelle!!! PLEASE! You say it's easy! HA! Sweet Diva, you are going to be famous! I've always known that about you!)

Happy Birthday to your sweet boy!
Before I read the post, I saw the pictures and thought the cake was DARLING! So don't give it a second thought!
My little man is into Spiderman too (and he's 5)! It's fun to see them get all excited over a superhero!
Glad to hear how fun and special the day was - HAPPY BIRTHDAY Josiah!

I am just ever impressed by your ability to bake. Anything having to do with ehe kitchen scares me. And awesome idea with the spider man pajamas. My boys are both very into costumes as well, that might be a great idea for them.
