Brain Food

Today during our lesson, we chopped it up a bit. This morning we had to run to Wal Mart so we did some of our DISTAR lesson before lunch and then took a break to "feed our brain". I was amazed at how Josiah responded to lunch in the middle of the lesson. We have been talking a lot lately about eating good foods. I started calling it "brain food" a few weeks back and Josiah loved the idea of feeding his brain so that he could learn more. Cookies and candy are not what we consider brain food but "happy food" and if he wants to eat "happy food", he must eat "brain food" first!

He is nothing but a chicken nugget and macaroni boy. But since I have changed how I present the food and since I have started the "brain food" talk, he has tried more and more things. Today he ate fish sticks which was SHOCKING! He even ate some apple! This is huge for my boy!

A few minutes ago he asked if he could see a picture of the brain. I have not showed him yet but I am hoping he is not surprised when he does not see the brain full of apples and green beans. Hopefully he will understand that the "brain food" goes into our tummy!

And if I may brag for a moment, MY BOY IS READING! It's not because he has memorized what the word is by looking at it, it's because he KNOWS how to sound it out and how to write it out! When you see how much the hard work benefits your child's learning, it does not make it hard to be disciplined. The results are enough to keep me motivated! And remember he just turned five years old a few weeks ago and he's learning what kindergartners are learning already! I think he's a natural! :)

(Ava Beth just turned three back in December and she is at the table with us the entire time we do the lessons. She has her very own Abeka work books and she is learning just as much as her brother. I'm so excited!!!)

I love that for you! Way to go Josiah! And don't you feel great for teaching him how to read?! What a sense of accomplishment!

I love the idea of calling it brain food and happy food. Reia just doesn't like the food they serve at school (it's all crap anyway) so we are going to start taking her lunch, but I have told her it has to all be healthy. I think I may start using these terms!!
