The Story of Our Flag

I am almost done with our room for homeschool. Most people use their kitchen table but I decided I wanted a special place since I don't have any wall space in our kitchen. As I've been painting and working on getting everything set up, I decided next week I will introduce some History to my little Kindergartner. I know I am going to focus on some National Monuments this year but I thought the Unites States Flag would be a great start! The Olympics have helped me have some great conversations with Josiah regarding the USA. It's been great timing!

I'm even going back to Betsy Ross who was chosen to sew the flag. We'll work our way to the thirteen stripes, the colors and what they stand for and all the places you will see the American Flag. We may spend a week on the flag, maybe two. This is what I love about Homeschooling! It's all about creativity!!

Of course next week will be a big refresher on Reading and Math too!

I've set a few rules for ourselves. Teeth must be brushed and student and teacher must be dressed (shoes optional). Sure, we can do school in our pajamas if we want and some days it may happen but I think it's important for me to show Josiah this is a part of our day when we focus and give our best.

My schedule will not always go as planned. Not possible when you have a toddler and pre-schooler in the house while you are teaching. There will be days we get started late or have to finish in the afternoon. Sick days, field trip days or just days we seem to be running behind. None of us are morning folk so getting dressed is a big deal for us! It will be a start! Hey you never know, we may be in the middle of a lesson and I think of a great illustration which requires us to go to the park and study trees. At least I'm hoping I get those spurts of creativity! My point is, clothes required! :)

Teaching Josiah about the Flag will help connect the dots as we say the Pledge of Allegiance daily. I'm very excited to start Kindergarten. I have one incredibly smart student!

I always find that I get more done when I actually get up and get dressed!
