For the past two months I have been struggling with losing my voice. It has healed up once and now come back with a vengeance. I've been researching the Internet on what I can do in case it is a nodule or a polyp. Friends say it is just allergies and as soon as we have a hard freeze, it will clear up. But, I'm in Texas and a hard freeze is hard to come by! I have NO symptoms of allergies so I tend to think it's NOT allergies. I HOPE it's allergies but sometimes singers have vocal issues at one point or another and I have been singing a lot lately so who knows. So after searching for a remedy, I found one that will be extremely painful for me. "The best medicine for one struggling with laryngitis or hoarseness is to refrain from talking for several days. This will allow your voice to have complete rest." Say what?
But, I am a talker. But, I am a BIG talker. But, I love to talk. But, talking is what I do. But, I am a social butterfly. But, I have good things to say. But, I have three kids at home who NEED me to talk. But, I have kids that get into things and need a stern "NO" sent their way. But, I sing. But, I sing all the time.
I once heard a story about Celine Dion not talking for a solid 24 hrs before she performs. Is that why she sings so good? Dang! So who knows, maybe this no talking thing will make me sing like Celine Dion!
Sooooooooo, I think I will be blogging a lot this week because I can't talk. God must have a plan for this! :) I have a bible study where I won't be able to talk, a meeting to attend without talking, and my baking business starts this week for the Holidays. Oh and I have rehearsal on Thursday night for a concert I'm singing at and for Sunday service. Then the next two weeks after that, I am leading worship!
I won't lie, I am freaking out a bit. So if you don't mind, please say a prayer for vocal healing. :) I'm sure my husband will enjoy the silence. And NO, I did not scream during the Cowboy game tonight. I didn't need to! America's team ROCKED tonight! GO COWS!
Okay so I had to add this from youtube after I saw a comment on this post! I will never forget my friend in High School, Kristi Dickens, who sang 1st soprano with me in our High School Choir. There is no way I could sing 1st soprano ever again. I am now an alto, HARD CORE. Right now, I think I could sing baritone! Anyway, we always got to sing the major high notes on certain music and whenever our director would ask one of us to sing the top note (the ones in the stratosphere), Kristi would ALWAYS shout out RICOLA, just like the guy does in the commercial. That has never left me and I was actually saying it in the microphone at church last weekend during rehearsal. RICOLA! I've been eating them like candy lately!
Watch this!

Hey have you tried Ricola? Jeremy has to use it when we preaches night after night and he was told no talkig until time to preach before... thought I might see if you knew of that stuff.... maybe it could help you too!
That's funny! :) I eat Ricola's honey and lemon like candy! Last weekend at church I had FOUR of them on my music stand. I have tried it all! I've been eating Ricolas since I was singing in High School. So I thought that was so funny that you mentioned that! :)
Vocal Rest for Mandi???? This I HAVE to experience!!! Ricola is very good stuff. Just whisper....hot tea and lemon too.
Love you.
LOL - I love how you tell us - "I did not scream during the Cowboy game...." - b/c you know what I was thinkging - Did she scream in the game???? LOL
I will pray your voice gets better! I know God will take care of it for you!
Nancy ;o))
it is so crazy too how something will work for someone else and not for others... I guess Jeremy isn't preaching as hard as your singing hahaha
Nancy, I only spend most of my time yelling at the COwboys when they are losing but they don't lose often. :)I think my voice stuff is a combination of lack of rest, allergies, singing and talking. :) Jeremy is going to LOVE this!
Unfortunetly I have Laryngitis, not a hoarse voice. Ricolas help keep the throat moist but won't cure laryngitis. I am loading up on Vitamin C!
I'm going to drink as much orange juice as my body will allow! :)
Walmsrt - has some stuff called
E-mergen-C. It is a packet of powder you mix and drink and has 1000mg of Vitamin C - I drank one last night b/c my throat was hurting.....
Nancy
I just got over losing my voice this last weekend. Sadly, I didn't realize how much I "raised"my voice to get the kids attention until that happened.
I'll be praying for complete healing of those powerful little cords! Or should I say "chords!. =)
